Identification of yeast strains

Description of service

The DBVPG Collection offers a complete service of identification of yeast strains using molecular taxonomy techniques [sequencing of the D1 / D2 domain of the 26S rRNA gene and of the Internal Transcribed Spacers (ITS 1&2 region), including the 5.8S rRNA gene]. Results are usually available after 2/3 weeks.

Upon request, a conventional characterization procedure can be performed [including examination of the morphology of cells and colonies by photomicrographs, determination of the mating type and physiological tests, as indicated in the monograph on yeasts: The Yeast. A Taxonomic Study, Kurtzman et al. (eds.), 2011]. In this case, the results are usually available in a few weeks, also depending on the considered species.

Generally, strains must be supplied as pure cultures and accompanied by all possible information regarding their origin and nutritional requirements. If the strains are supplied in the form of mixed cultures, an extra cost for the isolation procedures conducted at the DBVPG Collection will be applied. Any culture contaminated by mites will not be examined and will be immediately destroyed, so as not to compromise the integrity of the other cultures of the DBVPG Collection.

The strains for identification must be sent in the form of fresh culture in exponential growth and in agar medium (possibly in a tube). Please pay the necessary attention in the construction of the shipping envelope, in order to ensure the arrival of the culture/s in safe conditions.

At the end of the identification procedure, applicants will receive an identification report containing the best match between known species (or sequences available), and the result of the identification (name of the species and references).
