Study of oleaginous yeasts

Description of the research

The ability of some microorganisms to accumulate lipids is well known; however, the number of studies on the biosynthesis of microbial lipids for obtaining oleochemicals has only recently increased rapidly.

In this context, a large-scale screening was carried out over 700 yeast isolates present in the DBVPG (belonging to 45 genera and 86 species of both the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota phylum) for the selection of lipid overproducing strains. The screening led to the selection of some strains capable of accumulating high intracellular concentrations of lipids, characterized by high percentages of mono/polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Subsequent studies have made possible the optimization of lipids accumulation on substrates characterized by waste biomass which, after appropriate chemical, physical and enzymatic treatments, have been used as substrates for the growth of selected yeast. This research is in line with the “European Green Deal” and with the concept of circular economy and energy transition (production of biofuels/oleochemicals from microorganisms).
